Tim Sutton

Summary
Sutton works primarily in theatre, his first appointment being Musical Director for ‘Marat/Sade’ at the National Theatre in 1997. He has since been involved with over thirty different productions as composer, MD, and pianist, including the highly respected Hymn to Love, a theatre piece which toured to the Pleasance for the Edinburgh Festival and which was subsequently recorded for Radio 3. Most recently, he has written music for Pirandello’s As You Desire Me at the Playhouse, Women Beware Women for the Royal Shakespeare Company, and the acclaimed West End production of As You Like It at the Wyndham’s Theatre, which garnered critical superlatives for its chanson-inspired score. Sutton’s cabaret song Me and the Sunshine has been performed by theatre diva Maria Friedman, with whom he has an ongoing artistic relationship.
Sutton began composing for choir whilst a chorister at St Peter’s Church in Nottingham. At first inspired by the music of Herbert Howells, he began to branch into new territories, and is now an associate of Susan Digby’s chamber choir Voce, with whom he has just completed a tour of Tunisia. Quittez, pasteurs, published by Novello in 2005, was the first of a series of Christmas anthems composed for the London Concert Choir.
Biography
Tim Sutton started writing music at the age of ten. His first musical, Beauty and the Beast, completed at the age of sixteen, won the Vivian Ellis Prize, adjudicated by Cameron Mackintosh, Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice. Sutton learnt the piano with Martin Roscoe and Peter Pettinger, and went on to gain a First from Clare College, Cambridge, studying composition with Robin Holloway.
