Biography
French Baroque composer Francois Couperin was born on November 10th 1668 in Paris. His musical education came from the tutelage of Jacques Thomelin and his father, Charles Couperin, who passed away when his son was only 10 years of age. He was appointed as the organist at the church of Saint-Gervais in Paris, which he inherited from his father in 1685 and eventually passed on to his cousin, Nicolas Couperin. He succeeded his teacher, Thomelin, as organist to the Chapelle Royale and was given the title of organiste du Roi. He held this post whilst Louis XIV was on the throne. Through this role he became the court organist and composer in 1717. On a weekly basis, he and his colleagues would give a concert, mostly being in the form of suites for a variety of instuments. In 1724, he moved to a house very near to the Académie Royale de Musique where he remained until his death on September 11 1733.
