Biography

Composer Wlad Marhulets’ musical studies began at the age of 16 when he attended the Academy of Music in Gdansk, Poland. Inspired by the recordings of clarinetist David Krakauer from a young age, he studied klezmer clarinet playing and composition, later transferring to the Juilliard School in New York as a full scholarship student, where his studies continued with Oscar and Pulitzer Prize-winning composer John Corigliano.

Marhulets’ classical work has been performed by major ensembles including the Detroit Symphony, the Columbus Symphony, the Princeton Symphony, Orchestre Symphonique de Montréal, the Czech National Orchestra, the Orchestre National de Lyon, the Sinfonietta Cracovia, the Lithuanian chamber choir Jauna Muzika, the Qatar Philharmonic Orchestra, and the Macedonian Philharmonic Orchestra. The Lyric Opera of Chicago’s Lyric Unlimited commissioned and premiered The Property, his klezmer opera, in February 2015. Marhulets also composed original scores and additional music for a number of films, including Orchestra of Exiles (2012), November Man (2013), Ginosaji vs Ginosaji (2013), Sabotage (2013), Juggle & Cut (2013), Ambition (2014), Ruby Strangelove Young Witch (2014), The Giver (2014), Hitman: Agent 47 (2015), and Demon (2017).

Marhulets is a recipient of the Azrieli Prize in Music, the Susan W. Rose Fund Grant, the Peter D. Faith Prize, and five ASCAP Awards, including their the prestigious Leonard Bernstein Award in 2011.

As described in a review by New City Stage, "Marhulets miraculously combines the elements of klezmer, the ‘secular’ side of Jewish music, with the underpinnings of contemporary opera. His use of leitmotif is masterful, and his sense of vocal line, sublime. The reconciliation is in the music.”

Marhulets’ concert music is published by Wise Music Corp. and his work in film is represented by The Gorfaine/Schwartz Agency. He currently lives in Los Angeles, California.
