Summary

Tyler Futrell is an Oslo-based composer, originally from northern California. He studied primarily with Bent Sørensen at the Royal Danish Academy of Music, Lee Hyla at the New England Conservatory, and Michael Jarrell at the University for Music and Performing Arts Vienna.

His works have been performed at Ultima Festival, Borealis, Oslo International Church Music Festival, Nordic Music Days and played by Bit20, The Norwegian Soloists' Coir, London Contemporary Orchestra Soloists and Athelas Copenhagen.

Biography

Tyler Futrell is an Oslo-based composer, originally from northern California. He studied primarily with Bent Sørensen at the Royal Danish Academy of Music, Lee Hyla at the New England Conservatory, and Michael Jarrell at the University for Music and Performing Arts Vienna.

Since moving to Norway in 2010, Futrell has worked with a number of ensembles and festivals there, such as Ultima, Borealis, Oslo International Church Music Festival, Terjungensemble, Bit20, The Norwegian Soloists’ Choir, Trondheim Soloists, Engegård Quartet, Ensemble neoN and SISU.

Outside Norway, his work has been performed by the Wiener Concert-verein String Orchestra (AT), London Contemporary Orchestra Soloists (UK), Athelas Sinfonietta (DK), Esbjerg Ensemble (DK), Curious Chamber Players (SE), Dinosaur Annex (US), and the Zapolski (DK), Sonar (DE), Chartreuse (US), and Bozzini (CA) string quartets, among others. These collaborations and others saw venues such as Nordic Music Days (Helsinki), Klang Festival (Copenhagen), Jordan Hall (Boston), Tivoli Concert Hall (Copenhagen), King’s Place (London), St. Paul’s Hall (Huddersfield), Weimar Spring Days Festival (Weimar), and Institute del Teatre (Barcelona).

Futrell has also won a number of prizes and stipends, including the State Artists' Grant (3 years); the Ingerid, Synnøve og Elias Fegerstens stiftelse for norske komponister og utøvende musikere stipend, and the “Fordypningsstipend” (1 year) from Komponistenes vederlagsfond.
