Biography
Alexander Campkin (b. 1984) studied at Oxford University, the Royal Academy of Music and the University for Performing Arts in Vienna, and has been elected an Associate of the Royal Academy of Music for services to music.
His music has been performed and broadcast in more than two hundred countries – including at the Berliner Philharmonie, Amsterdam Concertgebouw, Tokyo Opera City Concert Hall – and has been described as “fresh and attractive” by the Gramophone magazine. He was commissioned by Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra to compose a piece for the BBC Proms 2018 at the Royal Albert Hall, London. Other commissioners include the Royal Opera House, Tallis Scholars, London Mozart Players and Theatinerkirche Vokalkapelle Munich.
Just months before he was due to perform with the Arad Philharmonic in Romania as a viola player, Campkin’s musical journey was changed forever after he received the diagnosis of multiple sclerosis aged 17. “MS changed my life. It stopped me playing viola but it certainly didn’t stop me composing.”
