Biography
Born in L'Hospitalet de Llobregat, he studied conducting at the Conservatorio Superior de Música de Barcelona with Eduard Toldrà. Later he perfected his studies with Sergiu Celibidache at the Academia Chiggiana in Siena and with Jean Martinon in Düsseldorf, where he obtained the First Prize at the end of his studies.
In 1966, the year in which the Orquesta Sinfónica de RTVE was founded, he obtained the first position of Principal Conductor by competitive examination. In 1967 he was appointed Principal Conductor of the Orquesta Ciutat de Barcelona and in 1978 Music Director of the Orquesta Nacional de España. Shortly after, he was appointed Principal Music Director of the Nederlands Kamer Orkest, of which he later became Principal Conductor. He has also been Principal Conductor of the Real Filharmonia de Galicia and Director of the Escuela de Altos Estudios Musicales de Galicia.
In the symphonic field he has had notable successes conducting the most important orchestras in France, England, Switzerland, Italy, Germany, Scandinavia and in the main musical centers of America and Japan.
In the operatic field he has conducted with great success most of the most emblematic titles, with a preference for the repertoire of Mozart, Strauss and Britten. He has also premiered the operas Divinas Palabras by Antón García Abril and The Duenna by Roberto Gerhard, of which he made the first world recording. He has recorded the zarzuelas Doña Francisquita, Bohemios, La Verbena de la Paloma, and Luisa Fernanda, as well as the opera Goyescas, all of them published by the Audivis label and received with great success by national and international critics.
Among the awards Antoni Ros Marbà has received are the Premio Nacional de Música (1989), the Creu de Sant Jordi (1988), the Arthur Honegger International Record Award for the recording of Haydn's The Seven Words of Christ (1966), the Barclays Theatre Award for the best opera production in the UK in 1997 (Idomeneo, re di Creta with Scottish Opera) and the Gold Medal of the Gran Teatre del Liceu in Barcelona (2012).
