His compositions consist mainly of chamber and orchestral works. The String Quartet, ‘Prayers from the Ark’ and Double Concerto were all commissioned by the Cardiff Festival and his ‘Vistas’ was commissioned by the Halle Orchestra and Kent Nagano.
Biography
Born in Johannesburg in 1928, Sir John Manduell studied at the University of Strasbourg, Jesus College, Cambridge and the Royal Academy of Music with Lennox Berkeley. He joined the BBC in 1956 as a producer, becoming Head of Music for the Midlands and East Anglia in 1961 and returned to London in 1964 to plan the new BBC Music Programme. In 1968 he left the BBC to become Programme Director of the Cheltenham Festival, a position he held for 25 years.
