EURIDICE (1981) 90’
(An arrangement of Jacopo Peri’s opera of 1600)
Synopsis
Peri’s opera Euridice tells the story of Orpheus and his journey to the underworld to rescue Euridice. Composed to be played at a wedding, it opens with a prologue that informs us that, in honour of the happy couple, the ending has been changed so that Orpheus may keep his paramour. Oliver has preserved Peri’s original vocal lines but recomposed and orchestrated the accompaniments, creating a fascinating fusion of the ancient and modern.
