Programme Note

- two dances for percussion sextet.

The title refers somewhat to Square-Dance and the dancelike Round (Rondo) and somewhat to the symbolism of masculinity and femininity, or yang/yin (etc.). The subtitles In Black and White and [She Comes] In Colours are taken over from the basic material for the work, adapted from an older work for a music school, but widely expanded and changed. “She comes in colours” is also the title of an old song by Arthur Lee, leader of the 60-70´s group Love.

In the second movement one player is the rhythmic leader (player IV) playing the pulse on two different sounding instruments (a wood and metal instrument, for instance a Japanese woodblock and a Balinese cheng-cheng). The players I-III listens to the wood-sound as the on-beat and the players V-VI listens to the metal sound as the on-beat. This results in a tightly interlocking ("hoquetus"-)technique. Of the same reasons second movement has no bar numbers, but only letters for indication of the sections. For which group is on beat, and which group is off beat?

Composed for the Kroumata Ensemble (Sweden).
