Inspired by the Emily Dickinson poem "Ah the Sea, Might I but Moor Tonight in Thee" and the Edna St. Vincent Millay poem "A Quickening Gust of Wind Flew Up To Me," Leon Kirchner presented L.H. to Leon Fleisher as a surprise in the summer of 1995.
Fleisher premiered the left-hand piece when in December 1995 at New York City's Carnegie Hall.
