A defining voice in late twentieth century American and international culture, Philip Glass celebrates his 70th birthday in 2007. Opera and the theatre are at the heart of his output, and this year surveys the new and the old in this genre. Principal amongst new productions of existing opera this year are the English National Opera’s Satyagraha directed by Phelim McDermott, which will without doubt be the hot ticket in London this April. Essential viewing and listening amongst new works are San Francisco Opera’s Appomattox directed by George Wolf and scheduled for premiere in October, and Book of Longing, a theatre work based on the poetry of Leonard Cohen, which will tour widely and will reach the Barbican in London this autumn.
