Berlin Philharmonic’s 2009/2010 season opening will be celebrated on August 28 with the world premiere of Kaija Saariaho’s new orchestral work, Laterna Magica . The work is inspired by the autobiography of Ingmar Bergmann, the famous Swedish film director. Laterna Magica is a joint commission of Berlin Philharmonic and the Lucerne Festival, where Saariaho is composer in residence. Further concerts with Saariaho’s works during the Lucerne residency will feature Ensemble Intercontemporain, the Emerson Quartet and Ensemble Contrechamps and the sound installation Nox Borealis by Jean-Baptiste Barrière.
