On October 31 Wigmore Hall presents a day-long celebration to mark the 60th birthday of Kevin Volans . Long term musical collaborators The Smith Quartet, percussionist Jonny Axelsson give performances of seminal works such as Akrodha, White Man Sleeps , String Quartet No 2 ‘Hunting Gathering’ and Asanga. Viola genius Garth Knox joins Volans in the world premiere of viola:piano commissioned for the event by Arts Council Ireland. Also new to London is Volans’ String Quartet No 9 ‘Shiva Dances’ which will be performed by the Smith Quartet.
Volans appears in conversation with Annette Morreau about the BBC Sound on Film TV, ‘Plane-Song’ which features a version of String Quartet No 5 ‘Dancers on a Plane. The two also discuss his work in general later in the day.
