Sallinen at 75
21st December 2009
This April, Finnish composer Aulis Sallinen celebrates his seventy-fifth birthday. Highlights of the season include a new commission, Chamber Music VIII, The Trees, All Their Green which will receive performances in the Netherlands, Scotland, Germany and Australia from the commissioners Amsterdam Sinfonietta (giving the world premiere on 6 March 2010), Scottish Ensemble, Wurttenbergisches Kammerorchester, and the Sydney Conservatorium. Other highlights include performances by the Helsinki Philharmonic and the Lapland Chamber Orchestra and a special focus
at the annual Naantali Festival in Finland in June. The Naantali Festival has commissioned a Piano Trio which will be premiered during the Festival, as well as giving the Finnish premiere of the new Chamber Music VIII.
Completed in time for the birthday year is the cpo series of recordings. Cpo has recorded and released all of Sallinen’s eight symphonies over the past few years, and the series is now complete with the recent release of Symphony No 6. With the New York Times writing ‘…Sallinen takes you on a journey so wondrous you are sorry when it ends’, these works are very much worth exploring.
