A new work for choir, brass and organ by Tarik O'Regan will be the centrepiece of the tenth anniversary celebrations of the John Armitage Memorial Trust when it is premiered in London by the BBC Singers and Onyx Brass on March 25. Following the world premiere at St Bride’s Church, Fleet Street, the piece will be performed and recorded for broadcast on BBC Radio 3 at St. Leonard’s Church, Hythe in Kent on March 26. O’Regan’s piece has been jointly commissioned by JAM and the American choir VocalEssence which will give the US premiere under director Philip Brunelle during the 2010/11 season. Since its foundation in 2000, the John Armitage Memorial has been responsible for developing the repertoire of works for choir and brass through commissioning many of the UK’s leading composers and providing performance opportunities for emerging talents.
The last six months has been a particularly productive period for O’Regan in the USA with the premieres of two Edward Thomas settings Where all is buried for choir and percussion and The Eyes of the Stars for five solo voices (or chorus) and chamber ensemble) and a Jubilate . The Great Silence (also Edward Thomas), a carol for choir and harp, was premiered by the Choir of Clare College, Cambridge, under director Timothy Brown in London in December 2009.
