Schubert rediscovered
12th January 2010
On March 27 2010 Staatstheater Saarbrücken will give the first staged performance of Sakontala – an opera fragment by Franz Schubert that has been reconstructed and completed by Karl Aage Rasmussen.
In 1820 Franz Schubert worked on a large-scale romantic opera based on the drama Sakontala by the classical Indian poet Kalidasa, the so-called Indian Homer. Due to Schubert’s early death this work should remain a fragment. Recently Karl Aage Rasmussen reviewed all the existing and newly discovered music and libretto fragments and formed a two act opera by empathizing with Schubert’s style and intentions as much as possible.
A complete recording of Sakontala was released in 2008 on the Carus label.
