Lars van Trier's movie Dancer in the Dark, which received the Palme d'Or at Cannes in 2000 is the source of inspiration for Danish composer Poul Ruders’ new opera Dancer in the Dark . The world premiere takes place at the Royal Danish Theatre in Copenhagen September 5. Later in October 2010 the NorrlandsOperan gives Dancer in the Dark its Swedish premiere and finally in 2011 the Royal Danish Opera brings the work to New York.
The Gothic scenography used for all the mentioned performances is made by Danish artist Christian Lemmertz.
