Byström and Brass On February 19, Stockholm Chamber Brass and Swedish actor Björn Granath premiere Britta Byström’s Inferno, a chaotic musical imagining of August Strindberg’s autobiographical novel by the same name at Skattunge Church, Sweden. Over the course of four days in February, music will pour out of various conference halls over a glistening winter landscape in Dalarna, Sweden during the Vinterfest. People journey from near and far to experience what BBC Music Magazine calls ”One of Europe’s most enjoyable festivals,” and Byström’s latest piece is a central point of this year’s programming. Travel the breath-taking route to Skattungbyn, sit on the church slope, take a deep breath, bask in the stunning view, and enjoy Byström’s music evoking Strinberg’s various obsessions, including alchemy, occultism, Swedenborgianism, paranoia and neuroticism.
Also in Byström news, the Nordic Chamber Orchestra and the Guerzenich Orchester in Cologne have commissioned her to create a new trumpet concerto for the Norwegian trumpet player Tine Thing Helseth. After playing Byström’s first trumpet concerto Delusions in 2011 Tine Thing Helseth wanted more. No wonder as Byström – a trumpet player herself – obviously has a flair for brass.
