Hans Werner Henze's L'Upupa
3rd February 2012
Henze’s Opera in Concert Hans Werner Henze’s L’Upupa und der Triumph der Sohnesliebe will receive its Dutch premiere on March 17 with conductor Markus Stenz on the prestigeous Zaterdaag Matinee series.
Markus Stenz conducted the world premiere of Henze’s opera L’Upupa in summer 2003 at the Salzburg Festival to great acclaim. Reinhardt Brembeck of Süddeutsche Zeitung remarked, “Above it all floats the wisdom of old age which has not yet come to rest. Thus a late work has come into being, which casually plays with the late works of famous colleagues, which fits in with Tristan and the Magic Flute, that would cunningly like to renounce all excitement and all earthly activity/hustle and bustle. That now as ever formulates Henze's belief about the beautiful, as one of the unworldly categories that the world cannot do without.”
The opera has since been produced several times by companies such as Teatro Real in Madrid, Opera de Lyon, Hamburgische Staatsoper, Sächsische Staatsoper Dresden and others. The first concert performance took place at Suntory Hall, Tokyo.
