Glass Celebrates 75th Birthday Season Philip Glass, one of America’s most esteemed composers, will celebrate his 75th birthday season with performances and events across the globe encompassing every facet of the composer’s career—opera, chamber music, orchestral music, dance, theatre works and more.The Tune-In Festival, curated by the composer at The Park Avenue Armory in New York City, takes place February 23-26 and includes a complete performance of Music in 12 Parts with the Philip Glass Ensemble among other events. Glass’ first and most revered opera Einstein on the Beach returns with a premiere in Montpellier, France in March 2012 and performances at the Brooklyn Academy of Music in September. In April, there is a rare opportunity to hear Glass perform some of his latest—and intensely personal—chamber compositions with violinist Tim Fain at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Adding to the celebrations is the first fully staged North American performance of Glass’ opera, Kepler at Spoleto Festival USA in June 2012. Glass’ birthday season concludes with the world premiere of The Perfect American, a new opera about the death of Walt Disney, in January 2013.
In addition to numerous live performances, Glass’ 75th birthday season sees the publication of the composer’s first ever recollection of a life in music, due out in 2012. Glass is also the subject of a Beck-curated remix project, featuring contributions from Tyondai Braxton, Nico Muhly, Amon Tobin, Cornelius, Gold Panda, Johann Johannsson, Nosaj Thing and many others.
