Declaring his devotion to the music of Witold Lutoslawski, Esa-Pekka Salonen will conduct performances of his music in the US and Europe, celebrating the centenary of the Polish composer’s birth.
Photo by Katja Tähjä In November Salonen returned to the Los Angeles Philharmonic for two concert programmes including Lutoslawski’s First Symphony and the rarely performed Les Espaces du sommeil. Included in these concerts was Salonen’s latest orchestral work Nyx, which was recently released along with his Violin Concerto on Deutsche Grammophon.
Woven Words is a multi-faceted celebration of Lutoslawski mounted by Salonen and the Philharmonia Orchestra, where Salonen is Principal Conductor and Artistic Advisor. Salonen and fellow composer Steven Stucky have created new films about the life and work of Lutoslawski as well as commissioned essays on the composer’s life, pulling together fascinating insights. Central to the focus is a series of concerts including some of the seminal works for orchestra and also chamber music with the Philharmonia in collaboration with the Royal College of Music. The series is supported by the Adam Mickiewicz Institute.
