Bryce Dessner in New York this Fall
7th October 2014
The Knights, one of New York's most exciting chamber orchestras, are performing three of Dessner's works (Lachrimae, Raphael and Tenebre) on October 15 as part of the New Sounds Live series at Brookfield Place, New York. The evening has been curated by John Schaefer, host and producer of WNYC Radio's popular radio shows "New Sounds" and "Soundcheck."
The Brooklyn Academy of Music is presenting two major events featuring Dessner's music as part of its Next Wave Festival. The first is the New York Premiere of LA Dance Project's production of Murder Ballades, choreographed by Justin Peck and set to music of the same name by Dessner. The dancers will perform this work to live music for the first time played by eighth blackbird, for whom the music was written. Performances take place on October 16-18. Since the premiere last year in Lyon, LA Dance project has toured the work to London, Paris and LA.
The second is the world premiere of a large-scale collaborative visual and choral work, Black Mountain Songs, curated by Bryce Dessner and Richard Reed Parry which rekindles the creative and utopian spirit of the famous Black Mountain College. This truly unique project, made up of music by Dessner and Parry as well as Nico Muhly, Caroline Shaw, Aleksandra Vrebalov, John King, and Tim Hecker — performed to a film created by Matt Wolf — is premiered on November 20 by the Brooklyn Youth Chorus conducted by Dianne Berkun-Menaker.
These incredibly diverse projects reinforce Dessner's ability to work across the genres and to create fresh and original music that continually pushes boundaries.
