John Tavener | 30th anniversary of The Protecting Veil & new recordings

Since its premiere at the BBC Proms 30 years ago in 1989 this piece has been popular the world over, with hundreds of live performances, regular air play on the radio and usage in film and television. Barley's new CD of this iconic work on Signum Classics will also be launched during the evening.

In this concert Matthew Barley’s ‘Living Programme Notes’ bring detail and in-depth understanding to an audience with examples played by Barley and ensemble musicians: The Protecting Veil, unveiled. Themes covered will include the influence of Indian classical music on Tavener and The Protecting Veil, the way in which Tavener used numbers and geometry, The Eternal Feminine, The Protecting Veil as a song for instruments, the map of Christian Orthodox feast days in the piece, and why this is one of the best cello concertos written in the last 50 years.
‘Over the course of 25 years I have fallen very deeply in love with this piece and the challenges it presents to the performers. Spending a day with Tavener working on the piece is a cherished memory and was as formative as it was fascinating, leading to many changes in the way I understood and interpreted the work.’ Matthew Barley
This event is the highlight of a Tavener Festival that includes The Tavener Centre International Symposium on June 14-15, a Tavener Evensong on June 14 and the celebration of two new CDs.
