Filming with Classic FM, Alison Balsom names Trumpet Concerto (2019) by Thea Musgrave as one of the five greatest trumpet concertos of all time.
‘I hesitate to say "greatest" because it isn’t a sport! And it is also pretty subjective,’ Alison Balsom caveats at the beginning of the video, which was filmed ahead of Classic FM Live in April 2022. “But these are really important in many ways,” she adds. On Musgraves work she said:
‘I think we would describe 93-year-old Scottish composer Thea Musgrave as the jewel in the crown of the contemporary classical world. She wrote a trumpet concerto for me and I performed it a few months ago, and it’s so sophisticated with its colour and its orchestration. '[The music] is so gorgeous, so original and really she is creating a new sonic landscape for our times.’
Also highlighted in her list is Concerto for Trumpet (1948) by Henri Tomasi and published under Alphonse Leduc. ‘Colourful, quirky and quite schizophrenic' she notes of the work, 'musically it is so gripping…it’s not a piece about rhythm it is a piece about colour and effects.’
