The Los Angeles Philharmonic and conductor Otto Tausk will give the world premiere of Meditations on Joy by Helen Grime at Walt Disney Concert Hall on February 23.

The Scottish composer describes the 15-minute piece as ‘an exploration of joy in all its forms’. In common with many of her pieces, it draws inspiration from literature, with each of its three movements being inspired by a different poem that evokes joy.

The act of composing, although often a huge challenge, can occasionally elicit the most intense feeling of joy, and that is something that I wanted to pervade the whole piece. – Helen Grime

Meditations on Joy
was jointly commissioned by Deutsches Symphonie-Orchester Berlin, the Los Angeles Philharmonic Orchestra, Music and Artistic Director Gustavo Dudamel, and the BBC. The Los Angeles Philharmonic will give further performances on February 24, 25 and 26, with performances by the other commissioning partners to be announced in due course.
