The BBC Proms return this summer with eight weeks of live music featuring contemporary classics as well as standout World and European premieres from the Wise Music catalogues.
On August 24 the World Premiere of Begin Afresh by Judith Weir, a BBC commission for the BBC Symphony Orchestra and Sakari Oramo, celebrates new beginnings, inspired by Philip Larkin’s great poem ‘The Trees’.
The European Premiere of Meditations on Joy by Helen Grime performed by the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra and Ryan Wigglesworth on July 23. This piece, a BBC co-commission, was premiered at Walt Disney Concert Hall by the Los Angeles Philharmonic Orchestra in February this year. Grime says this piece is “a person exploration of joy in its many different forms. The act of composing, although often a huge challenge, can occasionally elicit the most intense feeling of joy, and that is something that I wanted to pervade the whole piece. This is contrasted by much darker music, the one often coming out of the other quite unexpectedly”.
Two late night Proms from Rufus Wainwright on September 6 and 7 with the BBC Concert Orchestra present in brand new symphonic arrangements, his critically acclaimed albums Want One and Want Two.
