American Ballet Theatre opens its summer season at the Metropolitan Opera House on June 22, 2023 with the New York premiere of Like Water for Chocolate, the newest ballet from composer Joby Talbot and Tony Award-winning choreographer Christopher Wheeldon. The large-scale production was co-commissioned with the Royal Ballet, with a scenario by the celebrated collaborators Talbot and Wheeldon, inspired by the eponymous novel by Laura Esquivel. American Ballet Theatre's production is hailed as a "scrumptious spectacle" (New York Times) that seamlessly blends romance, movement, and delectable storytelling.
Talbot's new opera, The Diving Bell and the Butterfly, will have its US premiere on November 3, 2023 with The Dallas Opera. Set to a Libretto by Gene Scheer and directed by Leonard Foglia, the opera tells the story of Elle editor-in-chief Jean-Dominique Bauby, an icon in the fashion world who suffered a debilitating stroke at age 43.
