UK premiere of Jonathan Dove’s Marx in London!
This comic opera on the day in the life of Karl Marx with a libretto by Charles Hart, after an original scenario by Jürgen Weber, opens at Scottish Opera on Tuesday, February 13 in Glasgow. Commissioned by Theater Bonn to mark Marx’s bicentenary, the opera was premiered in December 2018.
The opera follows the philosopher and economist as he is beset by his troubled wife, his denied illegitimate son, his overly curious daughter, and his notorious lack of capital. Knowing that he will never finish writing Das Kapital, Marx escapes to the British Library, where he has a vision that will eventually become a nightmare.
Scottish Opera’s kinetic new production is conducted by David Parry, director Stephen Barlow and designer Yannis Thavoris with five performances in Glasgow and Edinburgh.
