Daniel Wohl continues to explore his trademark mix of acoustic and electronic sounds combined to “surprising and provocative effect” (NPR) in a new percussion concerto with electronics. Titled Uncanny Valley, the concerto was commissioned by the philharmonie zuidnederland for percussionist DOMNIQ (Dominique Vleeshouwers) performing on a specialized set-up incorporating localized speakers and live digital and analog effects.
Uncanny Valley takes on the current eruption of AI innovation to examine the possibilities of AI as a creative partner. Over the course of four movements, the piece moves from the unabashedly beautiful to the unsettling and back again, sometimes treating the AI-based electronics as what DOMNIQ calls a “sparring partner” and sometimes as a kind of collaborator.
