On April 19 in Valencia, Orquesta de València and SWR Experimentalstudio Freiburg, conducted by Alexander Liebreich, will give the world premiere of Inside Metropolis by Elena Mendoza.
In this work, the composer uses recordings from various cities such as Valencia, Berlin, Madrid, and Vienna, and lets them interact with the orchestral sounds in a collaged form. She is concerned with the spatialization of these sounds throughout the concert hall and the multifaceted relationships between the cities and the orchestra.
In this sense, I imagine a kind of acoustic window from the auditorium into an imaginary city composed of many fragments - into a personal utopian place that one cannot stop searching for. In the current times, which suddenly feel dystopian due to the various crises, the idea of utopia has once again become essential for my survival.
Elena Mendoza
Italo Calvino’s short text “The Invisible Cities” gave Mendoza inspiration to integrate city sounds into her orchestral work.
Inside Metropolis was commissioned by the Orquesta de València.
