The 2024 BBC Music Magazine Awards were celebrated last night at a star-studded ceremony at London’s Kings Place. The only classical music recording awards in which the main categories are voted for by the public, this year’s BBC Music Magazine Awards shone the spotlight on some of the most dazzling, adventurous and beautifully performed recordings of 2023. Wise Music Group is delighted to represent a number of the works whose recordings were celebrated at the ceremony.
First up, the Sinfonia of London, with their conductor John Wilson, had a very fruitful evening, taking home both the Orchestral Award and Recording of the Year prize for the their album 'Music for Strings', featuring Howells' Concerto for String Orchestra and Elgar's Introduction and Allegro.
Carl Nielsen's concerti were celebrated as this year’s Concerto Award went to the captivating album by the Danish National Symphony Orchestra, conductor Fabio Luisi, and soloists Ulla Miilman (flute), Johnny Teyssier (clarinet) and Bomsori Kim (violin). The album featured Nielsen's Flute Concerto, Clarinet Concerto and Violin Concerto.
Further, The Chamber Award went to New York-based Calidore String Quartet, for their superb recordings of Beethoven's Late Quartets, including String Quartets 12, 13, 15 and 16.
Guitarist Sean Shibe took home the the Instrumental Award for his dazzling new album Profesión, which features works by great Latin American composers, including pieces by Heitor Villa-Lobos.
The Newcomer Award went to pianist George Xiaoyuan Fu for Mirrors, his adventurously curated album of solo piano works including Henri Dutilleux's 3 Préludes for Piano among works by Ravel, Germaine Taillefaire and more.
Finally, the Premiere Award went to a bold, captivating album of 20th and 21st-century concertante works by Errollyn Wallen, Elisabeth Lutyens and Elizabeth Maconchy. These scintillating recordings were made by pianists Martin Jones and Rebeca Omordia, with the BBC Concert Orchestra conducted by John Andrews.
