Roxanna Panufnik's The Faithful Gazelle has its World Premiere next Monday at the West Cork Chamber Music Festival.
Commissioned by West Cork Music the first performance was scheduled at the West Cork Chamber Music Festival with clarinettist Matthew Hunt & the Signum Quartet for 30 June 2022, but due to Covid was cancelled. The World Premiere happens at last on Monday July 1.
The work is based on a classic Afghan mythical morality tale which tells of a beggar raised to riches by a magical Gazelle, only to lose everything again when she becomes sick and he ignores her pleas for help.
The clarinet with its enormous scope of timbre and pitch seemed the perfect vehicle for the Gazelle and the ‘cello a gruff, then majestic, then gruff again beggar! Roxanna Panufnik
