The World Premiere of Ross Edwards’ Craven Creek Chants will take place at the Craven Creek Music Festival 14 - 15 September 2024. Claire Edwardes will join Ensemble Offspring for this exciting premiere performance.
Craven Creek Chants is in part a musical commentary on Les Murray’s poem The Bulahdelah-Taree Holiday Song Cycle, which is modelled on anthropologist Ronald Berndt’s translation. The poem is a joyous, yet complex, celebration of country and community, evoking a strong sense of place and belonging.
Craven Creek Chants consists of three chants, or songs, intended as interludes between stanzas or groups of stanzas of Les Murray’s poem. They can also be performed independently as a short concert suite. Typical of much of Edwards’ music they are inspired by and infused with fragments of real or imagined birdsong and the interactive rhythms and drones of living organisms in an ecosystem.
