The first recording of Tyler Futrell's Stabat Mater has been released on BIS Records.
Earlier this year, Tyler Futrell was nominated for the 2024 Nordic Council Music Prize for the work.

Originally commissioned by the Oslo International Church Music Festival in 2022, Stabat Mater received wide acclaim, with additional performances added, due to popular demand. Since then, the piece has been performed numerous times and continues to captivate audiences.

Set to the classical Latin text from the Middle Ages, Stabat Mater is written for soprano, mezzo-soprano, string orchestra, and harpsichord.

Commenting on the release, Futrell said:

I am very pleased Stabat Mater has found a home with both Edition Wilhelm Hansen and BIS Records. This is a piece that has received a response unlike anything else I've written, and partnering with Edition Wilhelm Hansen and BIS will ensure it is out in the world for a very long time.

Futrell, who studied with Bent Sørensen, has lived in Norway since 2010 and has worked with ensembles such as Bit20, The Norwegian Soloists' Coir, London Contemporary Orchestra Soloists, Athelas Copenhagen and the Trondheim Soloists. His works have been performed at Ultima Festival, Borealis, Oslo International Church Music Festival and Nordic Music Days.

The winner of the Nordic Council Music Prize will be announced October 22, 2024.
