We are delighted that three of our composers will be represented at this year's Donaueschinger Musiktage, October 17-20, 2024
George Lewis, The Reincarnation of Blind Tom, Friday, October 18, 2024, Baarsporthalle
This double concerto for human soloist, AI-pianist and orchestra continues Lewis’ engagement with the music and life of Thomas “Blind Tom” Wiggins, a talented composer-pianist who was born under slavery but nonetheless became one of the most famous American musician of his age. In Lewis’ work, “Wiggins is metaphorically reincarnated as an AI” using the latest version of Lewis’ Voyager system. The Reincarnation of Blind Tom was commissioned by SWR for Donaueschinger Musiktage and will be premiered by SWR Symphonieorchester, conducted by Susanne Blumenthal.
Mark Andre, ...selig ist... for piano and electronics, Saturday, October 19, 2024, Donauhallen, Strawinsky Saal
It is a music of disappearance. It is the revelation of the most fragile, unstable compositional intermediate time-spaces and their idiomatically, sonically, phenomenologically, spatially and temporally correlating signatures. The composition often includes interpolations of phenomenological micro-intervals and micro-sound colours. …selig ist … was commissioned by SWR for Donaueschinger Musiktage and will be premiered by Pierre-Laurent Aimard (piano) and SWR Experimentalstudio.
Carola Bauckholt, My Light Lives in the Dark for double bass and electronics, Saturday, October 19, 2024, Schlosspark
The darkness envelops me like a warm blanket. I feel safe in it and my senses can open up like my pupils. Where do we still find darkness in public spaces today, except during power cuts? With its rich sound spectra, the double bass is a mysterious instrument. The low frequencies are physically perceptible, draw us in and defy quick comprehension (excerpt from the programme note). My Light Lives in the Dark was commissioned by SWR for Donaueschinger Musiktage and will be premiered by Florentin Ginot.
