Carl Vine’s Microsymphony will feature in two World Doctors Orchestra concerts to take place in Sydney and Melbourne.
The World Doctors Orchestra (WDO) combines the joy of great music with global medical responsibility. Founded in 2008, the orchestra has grown from 60 participants from 12 countries in the first session to more than 1,800 doctors from 60 countries. Through its concerts, WDO has raised nearly 2 million Euros in donations for medical charity.
Four times a year, around 100 physicians from numerous countries meet for several days of intensive rehearsals to then exchange their white coats for evening attire and perform charity concerts. The proceeds from each concert session go to selected medical aid organisations. In addition to the direct financial contribution, the organisations benefit substantially from the international solidarity and media attention associated with WDO concerts.
This year Australian audiences will be treated to Microsymphony by Carl Vine
The principal "theme" to MicroSymphony is a four-note duet that is first heard in the third bar of the work. This motif outlines two chords a tritone (or augmented fourth) apart that contain both major and minor thirds. The entire work, then, follows as a series of explorations of the symmetry and ambivalence of this one motif.
Microsymphony deals principally with transformation. Chords become major, minor or both, and then mutate completely. Rhythms become more or less complex against the prevailing pulse and then propel into new pulses and new rhythms.
MicroSymphony was commissioned by the Sydney Youth Orchestra with assistance from the Music Board of the Australia Council.
