Life on this earth first emerged from the sea. And as the polar ice melts and sea level rises, we humans find ourselves facing the prospect that once again we may quite literally become ocean.
John Luther Adams
The expansive orchestral work Become Ocean, composed by John Luther Adams, receives its Austrian premiere on October 30 at the opening concert for Wien Modern’s new season with ORF Radio Symphony Orchestra Vienna and conductor Ingo Metzmacher.
Like a lot of Adams’ works, Become Ocean is inspired by nature and our relationship with it. The title comes from a verse of John Cage, he writes:
LiStening to it
we becOme
oceaN.
In 2014, Adams was awarded the Pulitzer Prize for Music as well as a Grammy Award for "Best Contemporary Classical Composition" for Become Ocean.
