On November 21, the new violin concerto Shortening Days by Britta Byström will receive its German premiere with Janine Jansen and the NDR Elbphilharmonie Orchester conducted by Sakari Oramo.

The concerto is composed for Janine Jansen, about whom the composer says: ‘Composing for Janine Jansen has always been a dream for me and this piece was inspired by her expressive playing.’

It was commissioned jointly by NDR Elbphilharmonie Orchester and the Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra who premiered Shortening Days in May.

Revolving around the evolving interplay between light and dark, the music mirrors the transition from day to night. As the work unfolds, the light melodies eventually yield to darker orchestral tones, echoing the descent into nightfall.
