A noteworthy Nordic trifecta of performances of Missy Mazzoli's orchestral music takes place on February 14. The world premiere of The Shield of the Heart is the Heart - arranged by Mazzoli for string orchestra - is presented by the Arctic Philharmonic in Tromsø Norway. In Denmark, the Copenhagen Philharmonic presents the Danish premiere of Dark with Excessive Bright with bass soloist Olle Davidsson. Finally, in Finland the Tampere Philharmonic performs Sinfonia (for Orbiting Spheres).
Mazzoli returns to the arctic archipelago of Svalbard for the 2025 Arctic Chamber Music Festival. While there as a featured composer she will participate in concerts with her music including Death Valley Junction performed by the Novo Quartet. While in Svalbard she will work with musicians of the Voksenåsen Music Academy portion of the festival, which is led by Peter Herresthal, Mazzoli's frequent collaborator and Artistic Leader of the academy, and the soloist on the Arctic Philharmonic Grammy-nominated recording of Dark With Excessive Bright.
Reflecting on Mazzoli's return engagement with the world's northernmost classical music festival Herresthal commented "I have played Missy's concerto up north with the Polar bears twice and our cover photo for the Grammy-nominated album was taken in the last active coal mine in Norway. Missy was a hit in the arctic since day one - and I think she has been longing to be back. In addition to the world premiere with the Arctic Philharmonic strings, the prize-winning young performers of Voksenåsen mentor program will perform her solo pieces and quartets and work directly with the composer." Additional works to be performed by the academy students include Hail, Horrors, Hail, Fanfare for the Unimpressed, Kinski Paganini, Beyond the Order of Things and Harp and Altar.
