We are saddened by the death on March 13 of Sofia Gubaidulina, the most important Russian composer of her generation. Her deeply felt, intensely spiritual music inspired both audiences and a wide range of younger composers. We are proud to publish some of Gubaidulina’s most seminal works, including Feast for a Plague (a work with what The New Yorker calls “the power of a prophetic utterance”) and her Concerto for Viola, considered by many to be the most important concerto for the instrument.
Gubaidulina was a deeply religious person who explained her spiritual life and work thus: “I understand 'religion' in the literal meaning of the word, as 're-ligio,' that is to say the restoration of connections, the restoration of the 'legato' of life. There is no more serious task for music than this.” We aim to honor her legacy of building such transcendent connections and send our warmest wishes to her surviving family, friends, and collaborators.
Wise Music represents much of her music in the USA, Canada, Mexico, Central and South America.
