This Sunday March 23, the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment perform the world premiere of Roxanna Panufnik's Postlude in their concert 'Das Jahr' at London Southbank Centre's Queen Elizabeth Hall.
The concert, with piano soloist Olga Pashchenko, will showcase Fanny Mendelssohn's cycle of piano pieces, Das Jahr, alongside four new OAE commissions by contemporary composers: Panufnik, Errollyn Wallen, Electra Perivolaris and Freya Waley-Cohen.
The commission asked the composers to respond to and reimagine Fanny Mendelssohn’s piano work ‘Das Jahr’ for period instrument orchestra. Panufnik's work is inspired by the closing movement, ‘Nachspiel’, which she says “appealed to me with its intense focus on harmony which moves and never really settles until the very end.”
"I hope Fanny is looking down on us and cheering loudly - and happy that her music still relates to our sense and emotions, after 200 years" - Roxanna Panufnik
