The orchestral work TODAY AND TODAY AND TODAY AND TODAY AND TODAY AND TODAY AND TODAY AND TODAY AND TODAY by Ellen Reid receives its European premiere on April 5 at the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam, with Hannu Lintu conducting the Radio Filharmonisch Orkest.
Commissioned in 2021 by the Seattle Symphony, the piece was conceived as a response to a symphony by Jean Sibelius. “I was fascinated by the image of him returning to his workspace, day after day, attempting to summit an insurmountable peak”, says Reid. The concert will also feature Sibelius’ Symphony No. 7, his last completed symphony.
Reid’s work not only reflects Sibelius’ 30-year long struggle to finish his last symphony, but also evokes the feeling of being trapped in a repetitive cycle – an experience she deeply felt during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic.
The program also includes the Dutch premiere of Doom Painting, a trumpet concerto composed by Nico Muhly for soloist Tine Thing Helseth, as well as Samuel Barber's Symphony No. 1 in One Movement.
