Students of the University of York are to stage a production of Elizabeth Maconchy’s one act chamber opera The Three Strangers. The opera, which was written in 1957, is based on Thomas Hardy’s short story in which three mysterious strangers arrive at a shepherd’s cottage as a storm rages outside. Only at the opera’s climax do their identities become clear.
The production is a timely reminder about the work of this versatile composer whose centenary falls in 2007. Performances are on November 16 and 17 at the University of York.
