Programme Note
This album, entitled 'Sketches in Time', contains seven short pieces written specially for young pianists. They encompass a wide range of styles, from the quiet and atmospheric 'Venetian Waltz' and 'Inside the Cathedral', to lyrical pieces such as 'My Own Song' and 'Left Hand Singing'. The constantly changing time signatures of 'Rondino' and 'Changing Time' demand considerable concentration, and the final piece tests the students strength and sense of rhythm. Many basic technical aspects of piano playing - as well as a wide range of musical ideas - are incorporated into these short pieces, which makes them ideal for teaching and public performance.
Another dimension to this album is provided by my own drawings, which in a sense suggest a "picturesque interpretation", aimed at stimulating interest and imagination, and hopefully leading to a fuller enjoyment of the musical content of these pieces.
