Programme Note

“Carnival in Munich” for marimba solo and orchestra was composed in january 2005, commissioned by the Viva!Mozart 2006 Salzburg committee in connection with the celebration of Mozart’s 250 birthday.

Mozart took part in the Munich carnival twice – in 1774 and 1781 . We can only guess as to what he experienced at these two occasions. But surely he has been in high spirits! My piece was inspired by Mozart enjoying the carnival.

The second inspiration to my movement was Mozart’s solo concertos– a brilliant solo part in lively and cheerfull dialogue with the orchestra. A celebration of life. In my movement, the solo instrument is not Mozart’s piano, clarinet or violin, but a modern instrument – the marimba. An instrument, which – just as the fortepiano in Mozart’s days – is in a very fruitfull development, that I have been taking part of with 4 concertos and a number of chamber music pieces.
