Programme Note
Pianissimo Furioso is an étude for chamber ensemble. Convention offers a safe and straightforward connection between emotions and their accustomed expression in music. Sorrow is quiet, joy is loud, fear is rapid, idyll is slow, coldness moves in alto, warmth in basso, etc. Habits are so strong that “quiet” almost automatically means slower, and “loud” means faster. But feelings are mixed, and habits offer no events. That is among the reasons why this small work is an étude. And that is exactly why its form is clear-cut and classical (ABA), while its proportions are non-classical in their lack of symmetry.
