Programme Note
Among one of the Duke’s most ambitious “tone parallels” (a series of large-scale works written to portray the history of African-Americans through their music), Night Creature makes use of jazz band, solo piano, and orchestra to effectively demonstrate the musical ingenuity of marrying symphonic structures with jazz idioms.
