Programme Note
This piece was commissioned by the European String Teachers Association for Strings 99, an international conference held in celebration of string playing and teaching.
The first performance was given by the International Youth String Orchestra at the Guildhall, Portsmouth, on 10 April 1999 and the professional premiere was given by the Britten Sinfonia at the Bromsgrove Festival on 1 May 1999.
The piece, for large string ensemble, is based on the 16th century French popular song A l’ombre d’un Buissonet first printed in ‘La ‘Couronne et Fleur’ in 1536.
