Programme Note

Chroma comprises seven pieces of music by British composer Joby Talbot. Four of the works are Talbot's original music, including the high octane Hovercraft. The remaining three pieces are Talbot's own orchestral arrangements of three tracks originally by The White Stripes. The work was requested by Wayne McGregor, resident choreographer for the Royal Ballet in London, whose energy driven choreography alongside designs by architect John Pawson make for a thrilling piece of music and dance.

Reviews

The score, by Joby Talbot and the White Stripes, is a rollercoaster ride through near-cinematic soundscapes; action-movie capers, romantic piano tinklings, gladiatorial fanfares, Hitchcockian strings.

The score is superb – louche, rasping arrangements by Joby Talbot of tunes by both him and latter-day rockers the White Stripes – and it inspired what remains McGregor's most electrifying choreography to date.

Mason’s lack of choreographic ambition has been balanced by her radical appointment in 2006 of Wayne McGregor as resident choreographer. The night his Chroma played alongside Christopher Wheeldon’s DGV made the company look thrillingly modern and relevant. His work behind the scenes, encouraging a young generation of dancers to believe that new work matters, may be his most important contribution in the long run.
