Łukaszewski’s sure touch with vocal colour is evident throughout: as a choral conductor himself he understands voices and his response to these deeply emotive texts is tastefully judged and utterly appropriate, with harmonic twists and some wonderful moments of word-painting and atmosphere-building such as the limpid rhythms of Caligaverunt oculi mei, suggestive of the dropping of tears, and incessant quavers to “a” of Recessit pastor noster like an inexorable slow pulse, beating towards the destruction of hell.
